Greater occipital nerve blocks are used to treat what is called greater occipital neuralgia. Often times, patients have had a severe whiplash injury, or blow to the back of the head, that causes them to have headaches from the posterior aspect, or the back of their head, going towards the top or cranial vertex of their head.... The sphenopalatine ganglion block is also another block that we use for head and neck pain, and this case is often used for migraines. The sphenopalatine ganglion can be reached via placement of medication through the nares itself, or the nose.... MORE
Supra orbital nerve blocks are often used with supratrochlear nerve blocks, both of which are used for frontal headaches. So for patients who are having headaches in their forehead region or above their eyes, either from trauma or from some other entity like shingles or postherpetic neuralgia, we are able to block the nerve as they exit the skull at the base of the forehead.... Trigeminal nerve blocks are employed for atypical fascial pain. We often see this with patients who have had postherpetic neuralgia or shingles of the face, but can be due to other reasons where the cranial nerve 5, or trigeminal nerve, has been entrapped either by a vascular entity or even sometimes malignancy....
